A catastrophic cloudburst struck Uttarkashi’s Dharali village on Tuesday, triggering massive flash floods that swept away homes, livestock, and livelihoods in a matter of minutes. The disaster, centered in the Harsil area near the popular tourist destination, has left approximately 50 people missing and caused unprecedented destruction to the mountain community.
The Kheer Gadh river, swollen beyond capacity due to the sudden cloudburst, unleashed torrents of water and debris that completely overwhelmed the village infrastructure. Heart-wrenching videos circulating on social media capture the terrifying moments as residents screamed in panic while watching their homes being consumed by the raging waters. The footage shows a muddy torrent carrying everything in its path, including cattle, household belongings, and entire structures.
Local resident Rajesh Panwar, who witnessed the devastation firsthand, reported that between 10-12 people are feared buried under the debris. The economic impact appears equally severe, with an estimated 20-25 hotels and homestays completely washed away. This loss is particularly devastating for a region heavily dependent on tourism, where these establishments serve as primary sources of income for local families.
The Uttarkashi Police immediately mobilized a comprehensive rescue operation, coordinating efforts between multiple agencies. “Due to the rising water level of Kheer Gadh in the Harsil area, reports of damage in Dharali have prompted police, SDRF, army, and other disaster response teams to engage in relief and rescue operations at the site,” officials stated. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army units from Harsil, local police, and fire services have all been deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken personal oversight of the crisis, directing all District Magistrates to remain at ground zero with their complete teams. His administration has emphasized the need for immediate action to restore essential services, including clearing obstructed roads, repairing damaged water supply lines, and restoring electricity connections. The government has also implemented preventive measures to address potential waterlogging issues across the state.
This disaster occurs against the backdrop of an exceptionally challenging monsoon season for Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department had forecast extremely heavy rainfall for Tuesday, and the state has already witnessed several weather-related casualties this season. Just days before the Dharali incident, one person was swept away by strong currents near Haldwani, while two others drowned in swollen streams near Bhujiyaghat.
